Common Problems that may Require Refrigerator Repair

Although refrigerators seem to have made great strides since their inception, how they operate hasn’t changed much at all. Besides being mostly digital now, the one big change is the coolant they use now. Instead of chloro-fluoro-carbons (freon), they now use eco-friendly tetrafluoromethane or HFC.

It’s always a good idea to read the owner’s manual that comes with your new appliance. Having said that and without getting into specifics, here are a few common problems that may require you to call for a refrigerator repair service.

Leaks

While leaks are not as common as they used to be, they can and do still occur. The coolant, HFC, transforms from a liquid to a gas during a process called “vaporization.” As it travels through the coils on the back of the appliance and through its components it draws out heat and dissipates it. If you hear hissing, notice wet spots or the appliance doesn’t seem to cool as it should, there may be a leak somewhere.

Electrical Issues

Many refrigerator issues occur when the appliance isn’t properly plugged in. Using an extension cord not rated for the refrigerator is not only bad for the appliance, but it’s also a fire hazard. Other electrical parts such as power supplies and timers can go haywire as well.

Moisture

If your refrigerator gets condensation on its inside or outside walls or has frost buildup in the freezer, this could be a timer or thermostat issue. Don’t just wipe up the water without checking further to see what’s causing it in the first place. A properly-working refrigerator won’t have condensation or frost buildup anywhere.

The Door Insulation

Door insulation problems are very common. As the appliance ages, the insulation on the door can dry out and become brittle. This allows outside air into the refrigerator, causing it to work harder to keep the inside cool.

Check the door insulation regularly and keep it clean to ensure the door seals tightly with each close. If you notice any cracking in the insulation, call a refrigerator repair service in Livermore for replacement.
